A chiller is a refrigeration device that is used for the purpose of cooling water. It is a methodology which used to cool the surrounding when the weather or temperature of the place is not favourable. There are units made that can operate only to cool the place whereas there are options available that can work as thermal pumps as well. The latter can be various types and work as a double-acting chiller. Here are the various types of chillers that are manufactured for various industrial purposes.
Depending on cooling and connection characteristics, there are various types of chillers such as:
- Outdoor air-cooled chiller
- Indoor air-cooled chiller
- Air-cooled chiller with removable condensers
- Water-cooled chillers
Basically, there are two main types of chillers used water-cooled and air-cooled. There are two main types of components used and both are very similar because both products have the same components like evaporator, compressor, condenser and expansion valve. But according their name both products are different in their own way. When we talk about air cooled chiller it lets the heat out into the air whereas the water cooled chiller lets hit out into another water source which is also called water tower plant.
It’s shows their basic difference which allows the companies to choose from the two types, depending on their usage.
Air-cooled chillers
Air chillers are known for their huge size and a large amount of space is required to install them. Air chillers are not suitable for those industries which have small unit because air chiller requires continuous flow of fresh air. If there is an obstructed airflow, it might create problems in recirculation and also create noise problem if the air cooler is quite diminished as there fans installed in it which arise the sound of different range. Air chillers are affordable and require very less maintenance. There is no requirement of cooling towers, mechanical room to function or the condenser pumps. Basically air cooled chillers have less shelf lives.
Water-cooled chillers
The size of water cooled chiller is small but it needs cooling towers and a mechanical room for proper functioning. When industries faces the problem of space and air circulation then water cooled chiller is most suitable. The water-cooled chiller is not suitable if you are looking to invest in a cooler producing less noise. Maintenance cost of water chiller is high but when it comes to their life and efficiency water chillers is known to be more efficient than air-cooled chillers.
Application and uses
Chillers are mostly used in laboratories as it helps remove heat and passes it to either water or air. Compressor and temperature controller, the reservoir and the recirculating pump are the main components of a chiller. The working methodology of the chillers is very simple, the reservoir has a fluid which is recirculated either of air or water. It is necessary for the reservoir to be cooled as it is connected to the equipment. The controller regulates the working of the chiller.
The most common uses of chillers are:
Chillers are very useful in plastic industry to cool the hot plastic.
In the printing industry, when printing rollers generate heat, the chillers are used to cool down the heat. It also helps in cooling the paper when it comes out of the ink drying ovens.
Mostly sophisticated chillers are used in high powered electronics inside MRI and PET machines.
Chillers are capable for cooling down the lasers and the sources are used to supply power to them.
Chillers are also used for dairy farming purposes such as keeping the milk cool after production to improve its longevity.
