Marvel Studios’ version of What If …? is utterly charming. It is charming and charming. While that is to be expected, the charm and sophistication of the episode will surprise viewers who have seen it so far, which can be found on Disney+. It is based on an irregular Marvel Comics series with the same title and poses questions such as “What if Peggy Carter had the Super Soldier Serum?”. Then it extrapolates a whole new Marvel Cinematic Universe starting from that point.
What If…? Episode 1 Storyline
To be clear, the questions in What If …? are not posed by MCU. The MCU is the inspiration for the MCU’s first three episodes. The first episode is the most obvious example of this. Peggy receives the serum and becomes Captain Britain. The next adventure is a version of Captain America: The First Avenger, with key scenes, rearranged to give certain characters new outcomes. It also features Peggy, a voice-over by Hayley Atwell. It is a joy to see Peggy free from any constraints.
This episode stays true to Captain America: The First Avenger’s plot, but it strays from the MCU timeline where Steve was supposed to become a supersoldier. Hydra sabotage results in Steve being shot. Peggy is the only one who will replace him in Vita-Ray. He gains pounds of muscle and a foot height. The U.S. military doesn’t like that the expensive experiment was done on a female. Bradley Whitford plays the Agent Carter role of John Flynn, a misogynist who dismisses Peggy’s desire to fight on the front lines. Peggy is inspired by Steve Rogers, still in his thin, asthmatic body, to take on a Captain Britain costume, and fly off to Europe to rescue Bucky Barnes from Hydra.
Is Steve still around in the 21st Century, just like Peggy in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It seems unlikely, given his many health issues. This is a cartoon about a superhero. Marvel will find a way to get Steve back for the next season of Captain Carter.
