ROBOTIC PROCESS AUTOMATION (RPA) is not new to the country as the concept of taking human intervention out of automation has been in practice for ages. It started with simple paper-based manual processes which have now moved on to web-based portals for digital accessibility. RPA is also known as “Zero Code” or “No Code” automation where there are no programming codes and all you need is a set of tools, methodology, and process design to build your own programs.
India’s leading banks like ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, etc…Have adopted this technology for many of its back-office processes and it’s already proven its worth. All industries can benefit from this technology; although it holds more meaning for financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, telecom, retail, media, etc…
(Fake) News Alert: RPA is not the same as AI. While we don’t deny that there are some RPA bots that may be using Machine Learning (or even Deep Learning), they still do their work in a very mechanical fashion like moving data from one application to another or clicking on menus and buttons.

I have recently seen several YouTube video clips that are related to RPA. Some are informative; some are just fun to watch. I have listed the 10 best ones here in no particular order. I hope you enjoy them also! The first link is an introduction by Microsoft about what RPA is all about…explaining it in plain language.
The next couple of links talking about experiences with implementing RPA in a production environment…
And who knows if this will happen soon?? But future trends would show where organizations could find themselves testing their Digital Transformation journey.
This one shows how easy it can be to implement automation using software that supports Machine Learning and Cognitive Services.
FAQs:
Q. What are the top reasons why companies are adopting RPA?
A. Most popularly seen reason is to save cost and time by automating tasks that are repetitive in nature against an existing process map or document. Apart from cost savings, this helps organizations become more efficient, productive and have a better ROI on their investment.
Q. How does an RPA tool work?
A. There are two types of RPA tools available in the market today: Desktop Automation Tools – These kinds of tools use windows based user interface (mouse clicks, keystrokes, etc.) for simulating human behavior (from the machine itself). They work with all windows applications such as Excel spreadsheets, browsers, emails, etc., without requiring any changes in the applications. There are both commercial RPA tools, as well as open-source ones where you can download and install on your own servers or local machines to use internally.
The other automating tools are Application Automation (AA) Tools – These kinds of tools work by mapping out the application interface (and not for all windows apps) and then going through the defined rules to automate tasks against that particular application. While open-source RPA tools are available for the Microsoft Office suite, they are difficult to find for enterprise applications like SAP, Oracle, etc., so most organizations prefer AA over desktop automation.
Q. What is the difference between an AA tool and RPA?
Both serve almost the same function using different techniques so why would you need to choose between the two?
Conclusion:
If you are looking for a commercial product, RPA is the way to go. If you are open to using open source tools it’s easier with AA tools. Also if your application changes very frequently (i.e., ERP Apps) AA would be a good choice because creating scripts every time the UI of the app changes would not be feasible with RPA tools.
